When you buy a new call (short reed) is it safe to take it apart and try to tune it? my cousin bought a paralyzer and the first thing he did was take it apart, since then he could never get it to sound right again.

Every time that I get a new goose call I tune it to what I personaly like. However this is not something I would suggest for a beginner to do if they need to have it back in tune in a hurry. On the flip side it is a good skill to know. When you start calling more you WILL go through reeds and need to replace and tune the new ones. You may know already but here are a few tips if your cousin cannot get his call back to normal.

The longer the distance between the wedge and the tip of the reed the deeper it will sound and the harder it will be to blow.

The shorter the distance between the wedge and the tip of the reed the higher pitched it will be and the easier it will be to blow.

Also the gap between the tip of the reed and the tone channel will effect the tone quality. The bigger the gap is the harder the call will be to blow and the more mellow it will sound. The smaller the gap is the easier it will be to blow and the sharper the sound.

Also if you have a shaved reed, make sure the shaved side is up.

Good Luck!!!! Laughing

I always figure when I get a new call give it a few honks, moans, and spits and if it aint right take it apart and tune it myself.

I suggest you learn how to tune a call yourself. Its not something you can learn over the internet you have to have somebody show you.
